REQUIRED INSTRUCTION (ALL LEVELS)

 

The instructional programs of the District shall maintain a balanced, integrated, and sequential curriculum that meets the educational needs of all school-aged students. The curriculum will cater to a diverse range of learning rates, readiness, and potential, ensuring it is both broad in scope and flexible to meet student needs.

First Priority: Language Acquisition and Reading Skills
Language acquisition and the development of reading skills are central to every student's education. From kindergarten onward, the instructional program will emphasize a planned sequence of reading skills and language experiences. Continuous improvement of students' reading skills will be a focus throughout their educational journey. Schools educating students in kindergarten through grade three (K-3) will have a reading program that meets the requirements outlined in A.R.S. 15-704 and relevant State Board of Education rules.

Second Priority: Mathematics Mastery
Mathematical fundamentals will be introduced in kindergarten, ensuring that all students achieve mastery in the fundamentals of mathematics. Instruction will follow a structured and coherent sequence to build a strong mathematical foundation.

Additionally, by or before July 1, 2022, at least one teacher for grades K-3 in each school will be trained in dyslexia recognition and intervention, following the requirements of A.R.S. 15-219 and 15-501.01. This training will enable teachers to implement structured, multisensory literacy instruction based on evidence, to meet the needs of students with dyslexia.

While reading and mathematics remain core priorities, all areas of the curriculum will receive attention to ensure a well-rounded education.

Curriculum Sequences
The instructional program shall include planned sequences in the following areas:

  • Language Arts: Reading, spelling, handwriting, English grammar, composition, literature, and study skills.
  • Mathematics: Operations and algebraic thinking, number operations, measurement, geometry, and mathematical practices.
  • Social Studies: History, including Native American history, geography, civics, economics, world cultures, political science, and other related fields.
  • Science: Inquiry process, history and nature of science, life sciences, physical sciences, earth and space sciences.
  • Fine and Practical Arts: Art education, music (vocal and instrumental), and vocational or business education.
  • Technology Skills.
  • Health and Safety Education.
  • Physical Education.
  • Foreign or Native American Languages.

In addition to the core academic programs, the District's instructional program shall incorporate library instruction, individual study, guidance, and other relevant instructional activities. All instruction will comply with state laws and State Board of Education regulations.

The Superintendent is directed to emphasize the use of resources developed by the State Board of Education, particularly those that align with civics education and meet the academic standards in social studies, as outlined in A.R.S. 15-701 and 15-701.01.
